Research from the USA suggests that Chickpeas may help lower your cholesterol levels.
Effects of Chronic Intake of Black Beans and Chickpeas on Metabolic and Inflammatory Markers in Adults With Pre-diabetes. Published in 2025.
Objectives The objective of this research was to assess changes in metabolic and inflammatory markers after 6-and 12-week black bean and chickpea consumption in adults with pre-diabetes
Results Total cholesterol (TC) significantly decreased with 12-week intake of Chickpeas compared to baseline
For the study, researchers recruited 72 participants with prediabetes and randomly assigned them to eat a cup of black beans, chickpeas, or rice for 12 weeks.
The researchers found that for those eating chickpeas, total cholesterol levels dropped from an average of 200.4 milligrams per deciliter at the beginning of the study to 185.8 milligrams per deciliter after 12 weeks.
The study’s limitations:
The relatively small sample size of 72 participants and short duration plus it focused specifically on individuals with prediabetes, which means that the results may not directly apply to the broader population. Finally, this data was not published in a peer-reviewed journal.
